Orchid is one plant that exists in more than just one variety. Some of the most common types of orchids are Paphiopedilum, Oncidium, and Phalaenopsis. Each of these different type of orchids has it's own peculiar traits and needs to be taken care of in a specific manner.

Out of all the different varieties of orchids, it is the Phalaenopsis orchids that are the most popular. This orchid type is usually used for weddings. If you wish to grow orchids at home, then this one is the perfect option. It needs little or no sunlight. So, placing this plant in a window will help serve the purpose.

This type of orchid thrives in higher temperatures. It needs a temperature of 60F or above at night. During the day, the ideal temperature for this plant to survive should be between 70 -85F or more. While high temperatures are a must for this plant, what is even more important is that high temperatures are accompanied by higher humidity and air movement.

Another popular type of orchid is the oncidium orchid. This type of orchid does not belong to one peculiar region. Unlike most orchids that can grown only in a particular type of region, this one can survive in diverse lands. Some Oncidium orchids can survive in the hottest and driest of regions. While, there are also others that grow in less diverse regions.

Unlike most Orchid types, this one does not have any specific requirements for light. It can survive in as less as one hour of sunlight everyday. However, this plant can even withstand several hours of sunlight everyday. This plant needs a day time temperature that falls in the range of 80 -85F. This plant can survive in a maximum temperature of 100F.

If you wish to grow this plant, you need to use a good quality fertilizer that contains high amount of nitrogen. Use this fertilizer for the period of March to September. However, for the rest of the year, use a fertilizer that is high on Phosphorous. It is recommended that you fertilize the plant every two weeks when it is in it's active growing phase. However, when the plant is growing at a sluggish pace, using fertilizer once in a month will help serve the purpose.

Orchids make for beautiful plants and can add great visual appeal to your surroundings. And, since these plants do not need extreme care, you should not have a problem growing them either.
