A Look At Some Botanart Masters
Botanart is a short form for
botanical art. The two terms stand for art forms which have
their origin in Botany.
In the eighteenth century,
Linnaeus constructed new systems to interact with the natural
world. The natural world is also called botanical world. The
botonart work during this period increased much as far as
written communication was concerned. There were some biographic
complexities in botonart publications at that time which
disappeared with the passage of time. The sole reason of their
depletion was the arrival of new technologies. These new
technologies led to mass production of books and
serials.
Here are some of the most famous
botanical art masters:
Miller Hunt
Miller Hunt was a legendary
botanical artist who had a very popular collection of books.
She mixed all aspects of Art, History, Science and Literature.
She derived relationships among plants and gardens by mixing
these subjects. She also received a scholarship to collect
artworks, manuscripts and portraits that were significant to
the history of Botany. The Hunt botanical laboratory published
her botonart works from 1730 to 1840. This was a period of
intense intellectual research in the area of botanical
art.
Mrs Hunt presented the collection
of botonart in a dignified way. The purpose was to have some
original botonart works of other artists also in her work.
These botonart works were produced as book plates in the
previous centuries.
Original botonart works are the
legacy of the institute and it collects just that. It is a
matter of great regret that the original botonart and drawings
in the books of previous centuries were lost. All the precious
historic botonart work can be found in the collection of this
institute. In some cases the identity of the artist may not be
known.
James Sowerby
James Sowerby is one of the few
18th century botonart masters who was considered exceptional in
his skill. He was famous for his engravings for the monumental
flora lonedinensis.
Elizabeth Blackwell
Elizabeth Blackwell was another
very famous 18th century botanical artist. She produced her
original botonart on Herbarium et Auctum. It is considered one
of the most important masterpieces of herbs and other medicinal
plants created at that time.
The school of George Ehret was famous for its botonart etching
for Phytanthoza. It is also said to have the complete record of
flowering plants. No one, who has studied botonart, will fail
to refer leading Japanese master of Kano and Tosa styles. He is
none other than the legendary Tachibana Morikuni.
